I need your help. Sound off in the comments. If you’ve read my book, you’ll know that on the very first page I challenge you to get my attention in a unique way. It’s been over a month or so since the book launched, and so far I’ve had some creative attempts, but none that have REALLY gotten my attention. Today, however, well, um…
I got an email this morning from a guy who bought my book and took video of himself reading it on his couch… in the nude.
It’s about a minute long (the video, stop it) and he’s covering up his private parts with my book (eww). There’s no name. His face isn’t blurred out. You can’t see anything naughty. He doesn’t talk, he just reads the book.
My insider circle told me to absolutely NOT publish it. I’m not convinced however. What do you say? Convince me either way and I might just publish it.
And before you accuse me of making this up for attention, I promise you I am not.
Here’s a video on YouTube that is full of naked people, just in case you were wondering if publishing something like this on YouTube was possible. I didn’t know either.

I was just flipping through the June 2010 issue of Inc. magazine and I was reading a story Jason Fried, the founder of 37 Signals. He was telling stories about why they hire people. He said that we don’t even look at resumes, instead, we look at cover letters. Cover letters tell a story better than a resume, that’s for sure.
He also talked about they hired one person after that person went out and created a special website just for them, to impress them. He pitched them. Here’s the website.

So smart. He got the job.
You want the job? Show me.
I tell a story in my book about how I used post-it notes to get offered a job. I wanted the job. I knew they were interviewing a ton of people. I wasn’t any better then any of them in graphic design. In fact, I was an average designer at best. But I wanted the job.
I tell another story in the book how I wanted to get into the Internet video business. I had a friend who owned a big SEO firm and I pitched him via video on YouTube. I could have sent a resume… c’mon, that wasn’t going to work.
You want the job? Show me.
So what the heck are you doing? You need to stand out and get noticed and PROVE to potential employers that you WANT the job. Otherwise, why should they hire you?
When I owned my own agency back in the dot-com days, I would never look at resumes. I would say, “show me”. If they couldn’t show me what they’ve done, I wouldn’t even pay attention to them.
Doers get what they want…
I recently posted on several Cleveland internship boards that I was looking for an intern. So far I’ve received about 20 emails from people. Not a single one of them has a website, or even a blog, or even a Twitter name. People… you’re applying to be an intern for a guy who does Web marketing.
The point is this. If you can’t show me, you don’t get hired. Want a better career? Want more money? Want longer vacations?
Show me.
Now get to work.

Had a great time in Boston last Friday at the Hubspot offices doing Hubspot TV! Below is the recording. I flew out Friday morning from Cleveland. Took the Boston Metro directly the studio. Wow, what a nice place they have there at Hubspot. Met with Mike Volpe who gave me a nice little cubby hole to hang out in for a few hours before the show where I could work.
Then I went around the corner and had a little lunch at P.F. Changs, and also went into the Borders and found a copy of my book!
Then it was back to the studio to shoot the live show! Here’s the recording.
Here’s the video link.

Look who I ran into at Affiliate Summit East 2010. Funny, I had just spoke about him an hour early in my keynote presentation.
He’s featured in the book as well. What a fun guy. He has 10 or more of these suits he wears around, all day, wherever he goes!

Wow, the book is real! I don’t have it in my hands yet, but my publisher took these an hour ago in NJ. Man, that’s bright orange!

I’m doing a special seminar to promote my book launch on August 25th in Cleveland. Can you come? Here’s how to rsvp.
Jim Kukral’s new book is coming out and he’d like you to join him for a informative, yet informal live seminar (and launch party). Please join Jim at the Cornerstone of Hope in Independence on August 25 at 7pm. Jim will present an hour-long, free seminar on how to use attention-getting marketing techniques to help you find a job or generate more sales, leads and publicity for your business.
The event is free, however, we’re only asking for a small donation for the Cornerstone of Hope.

One of the last chapters in my book is called “But Wait, There’s More!” Every time I hear that I think of the late, great Billy Mays. RIP. The truth is that people tend to buy when they feel like they’re getting “more”. That’s why bonus items works so very well. Every business who sells ANYTHING should use them.
So here’s my bonus items for my book. I’ve created some bulk purchase packages for you to consider. The way I look at it is, you and your team or organization get copies of my book, AND you get me in a variety of roles as well. Bonus!

The bad guy can get lots of attention.
One of the things I write about in the book is how you can be the bad guy for attention. The bad guy, the negative guy, the jerk… that person can get attention like nobody’s business. Why? Because people are drawn to the negativity more than they are to positivity. It’s just human nature. People love to see someone stand out, good or bad.
One of the problems with being the bad guy is that while you can get a lot of attention, you also get a lot of criticism and even more people who will root against you and want to bring you down.
If you know anything about poker, you will know who Phil Helmuth is. He’s pretty much an icon in the poker world, having been one of the youngest to win the World Series of Poker about 20-years ago. Since then he has continued to win many events, and continued to create this “loose cannon bad guy” type image for himself.
That’s great, he gets a lot of attention for his brand. But guess what? People like to see him lose now. Watch this video.
Some questions to ask yourself before you go the bad/negative guy route with your brand.
1. Are you sure you can handle it? Being the bad guy takes committment. You can’t flip from it. You have to live it. Otherwise nobody will believe it.
2. Do you want to do it? You should realize that while it’s good at helping you get attention, it’s also good at making you into something you might not be. If you aren’t that type of person in real life, don’t try to fake it, it won’t work.
Personally, I love the bad guys. They’re fun to watch because they know how to get a lot of attention. But I’m not that person, so I can’t be one of them. Are you a bad guy?

As I said in the title, this video has lots of cursing in it and is not safe for work or kids. But wow, is it funny. Makes you think… The Apple branding machine has really done an amazing job haven’t they? I still want my iPhone though.
